Trying to understand the imperlist faction vs. the shogunate conflict is hurting my brain but I want to root for the shinsengumi however its hard doing that knowing the shogun retainers are rutheless to the people however they do want to unify and maintain the peace in fedual japan in this era after several civil wars
there is no "good side" in this war, like in many wars. I finaly got to understand the bakufu era better by watchign the taiga Drama Shinsengumi! (2004) and Ryomaden (2010). You can see the angle from both side and understand everything better
