"It would have been better of this was just a simple slice of life, drama and didn't involve shounei ai/bl. Yes, for the first time in my life, I a (self proclaimed) fujoshi hoped that there was no romance involved. I wished that it turned out be just a lonely author who was seeking for a family. Or if they wanted something more realistic, it would've been better if the plot is about strangers/family that has been coping for another family's lost and that they are struggling to keep it together so when they met, theg wer trying to do all sorts of things together and figuring it out + puberty problems/topics being opened up or how yuuta is also struggling to adapt in another environment he's unfamiliar with-that kind of plot. The real thing here is, I was irritated with taiga and his decisions portrayed here, I meant I know you want it to be realistic and all but.. I can't. Shuu on the other hand, shouldn't have clang too hard to the family and would have been better if he chose another single man. (lol) "

UNDERSTANDING THE STORY
To be honest, I was just avoiding the plot like it was a plague because for me it was a cliffhanger, that there was something missing or that I'm seeking for more just to be satisfied because the shounei ai portrayed here is not my cup of tea. But note that I read every single line, zoomed too closely just so I could admire and understand the art and topic they are talking about. The sister issue was a great plot to keep the story going.

Overall, the story is so-so... For me... But it was a great read. Didn't waste my time even if it took all of my working hours.

I'm impressed from an objective point of view. The writing, though a bit sugar coated, was excellent. The art is, of course, a bit dated, but the manga itself is rather old. The characters are endearing and admirable with just enough roughness around the edges to make them feel real. Over all this is definitely a manga worth reading.

Now, my subjective and personal feelings. Due to being written for the shounen ai genre, I found myself dissappointed. What can I say? I love a little sex in my homosexual romance manga. Even if it is not explicit and only implied - ie: They lie down together kissing and shedding clothes in one frame and wake up in each other's arms in the next frame. This felt like the two, nearing middle age, protagonists were actually tweens playing house or a pair of married octagenarians with false hips and bad backs. The pitiful excuse of "I'm not ready" really made it worse for me. The guy has been in love for years and was completely ready if it meant he'd not be found out sooner or allowed to stay. Yet, to consummate their newly found mutual love it was a no go? Sorry, that was just too lame in my book. There are probably thirty thousand "fan theories" as to why he wasn't ready, but that would not change the fact that they would all be just theories and nothing the writer or mangaka included to justify or explain his reaction. He would have done it the night of the festival, but not now? It was an obvious ploy by the mangaka to not have to include anything sexual beyond kissing. Which, honestly, is why I often avoid reading shounen ai. I don't mind only kissing if the characters are kids because that seems realistic given their innocence, but two middle aged men not having sex? Sorry, not on the planet I have lived on for nearly 50 years! Regardless of this disappointment, I still enjoyed reading this manga very much and I would definitely recommend it.

I dont think the sister is abandoning them. Maybe she needs time for herself after all the things she had done to raise her younger brothers. But seriously, at least show the sister too (╯°Д °)╯╧╧

This is one of those good, old-time-y, long-running series to read on cold winter nights: family soap opera, not entirely realistic, but not unbelievable either, nice balance of comedy and heartache.

Mainichi Seiten series review February 11, 2015 2:42 am

This series is worth taking the time to read, it deals very realistically with some very real familial issues in a common sense way. The touches of humour and the inclusion of some very light hearted manner are a nice way to maintain the readers interest and stop it from becoming dark and morbid. Many readers will complain there was no sex as such but it really wasn't needed and would have distracted from the characters development I feel. Perhaps another two volumes dealing with Jyou and Shima might have been worth a try, anyway I hope others enjoy it as much as I did
