Mimi's manga / #Romance(25)

Chou to Hana no Kankeisei

Complete | Akabeko | 2017 released

I really liked the art style but the main couple were probably the least interesting characters out of the 3 stories. It wasn't a bad story to read and the characters weren't unlikable, but I felt the story that had the other two getting engaged was the best out of the 3. I also really wish the two delivery guys got either another chapter or more of a story in their chapter mainly because they were also likable but their story ended too quickly.

HOLY FUCK DO I LOVE THIS COUPLE. Ok, right off the bat, I got tired of the number of sex scenes that were in every chapter. I could really do without that. There was also some dialogue that I saw as borderline homophobia but can also be interpreted as someone who didn't see being gay as normal because of where he grew up. It definitely isn't as bad as some homophobic lines I would see in BL. Other than that, the characters, the art style, their story and them being just an adorable ass couple made me cry. I wish there was more to type about, though. It's really just a cute story about two people getting to know each other more... while also having a lot of sex. I really hope sublime or someone publishes this in English because I will buy this in both languages. Also, thank you for that page at the end of chapter 6 where Kurokawa talks about how cute his boyfriend is. I legit cried. God bless. Update: I’M SORRY BUT 2019 ME MUST HAVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE WEIRD RECORDING THING GLASSES DUDE WANTED TO DO???? So, like, glasses dude wants to film them having sex but the other guy really wasn’t comfortable with that. And instead of just going “ok, I respect that” he just kept??? bringing it up??? It was kinda the one thing that really annoyed me. More importantly the bit at the end! Glasses dude finally got to record them doing it but it was still him pushing the other guy to agree to it. I would’ve loved it if the other guy came up to him after thinking it over, something like “our relationship is in a good spot right now and now that we’re living together I want to do something nice for him” kind of thing. It would’ve ended up being something he wanted to do because he knew it would make glasses dude happy. The whole story is really sweet and I think the both of them as a couple is really sweet, which is why the way we got the recording scene pissed me off so much because even during the recording it scene itself was really fucking sweet!

Hoshi to Harinezumi

Complete | Nago Nayuta | 2000 released

I really hope this gets an official translation (update: it got an official english translation) because this was such a cute story to read, I'm definitely buying the physical Japanese soon. I did have a problem with how the apology went down with one of them (don't remember who, this is an old review) trying to force the other to do something sexual that the other person wasn't fully comfortable with. I mean, I'm glad they showed how pissed off the other was about being forced, but the way the apology was written felt so dead as if the author wanted to get straight to a sex scene. They could have spent more time making that apology much more emotional and believable especially when he got what he wanted in the end. That sort of bothered me.

Sensei wa Butchozura Shite Yatte Kuru

Complete | KURUSU Haiji | 2017 released

…. Listen… Overall, Kaji and Yura are my favorite couple over Maki and Hagiwara mainly because I think Maki is an asshole. I understand that he super loves his son and Hagiwara but his over-possessiveness and the way that he treated Yura and Kana pissed me off. I like how Kaji and Yura were written a lot more and it seems like the author does too seeing how much care they gave these characters. There were bits and pieces that I thought were dumb. Stuff like Kaji putting up that “I’m not interested in men” wall, and not speaking up every time Yura cuts him off. That’s also a bs move on Yura for jumping the gun too quickly… But it’s also understandable why he does this. I just wish that was something they worked on in the 2 books rather than letting him keep doing that. But fuck all that because the only thing that REALLY matters is Kana and Ritsu! AGAIN! They are the power couple, the fucking MVP out of all 3 of these mangas, and deserves a super cute, completely fluff one-shot manga about them trying to be together in high school and everyone else just fucking accepting it! No sex, just a super cute teen romance is all I need. Update 5/26: Just found out there's a vol 3..

Ayakashi wa Shousetsuka ni Koi wo Suru

Complete | Tanno chikuwabu | 2019 released

It was alright. Really adorable if a little boring. I wish there was a bit more involving the yo-kai and the fact that they kept recapping the beginning of chapter 1 for the next 3 chapters was really annoying. I would have loved to have seen them go to see his parents, introducing Rin, and trying to rekindle a relationship with his family. Even his brother was on board with helping to make the family whole again. Maybe even a newer family photo with Rin in it? That would have been cute. Speaking of cute, that chapter 5 oneshot was not. Guilt tripping, manipulation, and rape? In a chill story like this, that oneshot was out of pocket and disgusting.

Recipe No Oujisama

Complete | junko | 2012 released

This has some cute moments. Nothing super important other than one of the main dudes getting sick, but it was handled more comedic than anything. It is one of the books from Junko that I hope gets a physical release in English. While I did like the main couple and their struggle to say how they felt, I was way more interested in the other two who got that small bit of story at the end. I would love to see them get a whole book because they seem like they're carrying baggage and I wanted some angst in this book.

Motoyan Papa to Hitsuji-sensei

Complete | MIZUKI Tama | 2016 released

I know this is still ongoing but, what's been translated so far, I really love it. I hope it gets picked up because, OHMYGOD, the translation is horrible. Vol 1 more so. I can tell that this has a really cute story, I like the characters and them as a family so much that I want to buy this, and there wasn't a lot of bullshit stuff you normally see in a BL manga. So having vol 1 translated the way it was really ruined the feeling of the emotional parts. Vol 2 had typos and small things that didn't bother me as much (they do need to slow down on the word impossible, holy shit), but it was a lot better to read through. I hope vol 3 onwards has a better translation team because I want to be even more invested in these characters than I already am, but with this level of writing from the translator(s) it feels like a 2006 fanfiction.net story.

Itou-san (KURAKA Sui)

Complete | KURAKA Sui | 2015 released

If I could scream to convey how much I loved this "main" story, I fucking would... But I don't think that would get my point across very well in text. Firstly, I love the main story. I cared a lot about both Itou and Kyousuke to the point where I could feel myself almost about to cry at some points. I have yet to read the prologue story (as of writing this) but, from what I read from one comment, both Itou and Kyousuke had hellish upbringings that (at least for Kyousuke) made me really want to see them be together. I was also ready to drop this title because I thought the problems I have with most bl manga were gonna be in this, but they wrote Ito to love Kyousuke so GOD DAMN MUCH and it made me really love him as a character. It made me love their relationship and how they showed that they needed each other. I was afraid that the rape and murder would be glorified like 90% of this landscape, but it is shown in a horrible light, being a story about how two people are trying to get out of these situations together. Fucking thank you! I also want to talk about the last 2 chapters a little. I think they were very important to the main story and I did actually cry during both of them with how they both completed and complimented the story to show you how they were living during them being "on the run" and after all the bullshit was over. God bless. Personally, I did not like the parallel story chapter. It is the reason I put pedophilia-ish as a tag. I am not here for older people "waiting" on an underage person to be of age because it means that they have feelings for this child even though they know they shouldn't. I don't care if you're 13 or 19, you are still a child until 20. And even then it doesn't really feel like you hit "adult" until 25+, but at least you're not a fucking teen. After falling in love with these characters, showing that Ito had feelings for the underage teenager but waiting until he was 18 is still really disgusting to me. There was even a comment he made about Kyousuke in freshman year that just fucked me up in the most disgusting of ways. Even though he waited till the bare minimum it still didn't feel ok to me and it was horrible no matter how sweet Ito was. Still horrible. Chap 7's review in 5 seconds or less: What the fuck? No.

Sekai wa Shippo de Dekiteiru

Complete | HONJOh Rie | 2018 released

In general, it's a cute story with characters that are fine but no one I cared to get too invested into except for Riku. I do like that this book only talked about 1 story instead of 3+ like most bl manga, it gives you more room to flesh out the characters and story... Room the author clearly didn't take, I feel. While I liked it to the point of wanting to buy it and seeing this be turned into a two-part OVA, I feel we moved too fast to let Iori and Goura characters develop. They just felt flat as people with the only thing moving them being Riku. Maybe I just didn't really care for Iori and the way he thought about Beast Folk. A thought he clearly got from his grandmother that I don't completely agree with. There were some nice moments especially at the end I would've love to see more of through out the story. However, can I just yell about a part of the story I didn't understand and I'm not even sure if this was the author's or translator's fault? There's a part where Iori begins to think about adopting Riku for a second but then says something like "I'm gay, I can't do that". The story up until now has not talked about queer people adopting nor did it ever come back up. What came up instead, some 3 or 4 pages later, was Iori talking to Goura about how humans can't adopt Beast Folk because they were abused or treated as pets by some humans in the past so they don't allow that anymore. While that's a good bit of backstory that would be interesting to know more about, WHY was that not his first thought as to why he couldn't adopt Riku instead of him being gay? It should've been "I'm human, I can't" and not "I'm gay, I can't" if you're never going to bring up why queer people can't adopt in your modern fantasy/slice of life story. That moment was just left there hanging and because it never came back up again it felt even more out of place and weird. Maybe there's something in Japan that makes is difficult or impossible for queer people to adopt at the time of writing the story but we wouldn't that and there's no in-book segment explaining it..... ????? I'm realizing now that this story has a problem with explaining things. It can't even hide behind having more sex scenes over plot since there were only 2½ total sex scenes. It just felt like they went in circles talking about the same thing that they could've moved on from or worked off of by explaining some other things, but they never did. They would just bring up the same topics as if they're bringing it up first the first time while also stopping at the same pots, never explaining it further. Again, while I like this story, my main problem with it was the lack of story explanation and that adoption dilemma really got to me.

Honestly, the main story was pretty cute as a whole. But the way the relationship started was kind of weird, the part in the bathroom was basically harassment... So that was a sour spot in otherwise a cute story with a cute couple and cute child living a cute family life together. As for the short story, I'm not too sure how I feel about that. Despite it being a short story it tried to drag out it's plot as if it was gearing up for another chapter or sequel spin-off... that never happened. The characters were fine, but it ended too abruptly for that ending they were trying to do to make me care about either of them.
