otakulys's manga / #shounen ai(68)

Ashita Shinu

Complete | akane sora, akizuki ichiha, anthology, aoi aki, aruku, kai (甲斐), mayama rika, otono awo, yuryi | 2000 released

Very sad, some more than others. I think this anthology showed strengths and weaknesses among the mangaka involved. Short stories can be challenging, writing something satisfying that fills in the blanks and makes sense in such a limited amount of space. The first story broke my heart into a million pieces. I was ugly crying and my cat came and forced me to hold him, which made me cry harder, so there's that. I was super bummed to see that mangaka has yet to produce anything else. I hope that just means she's new and we'll see a lot more from her in the future. Several stories were a little brief and rushed, but the ones that hit you hit you hard. Definitely a sweet but very heartbreaking anthology. Obviously, haha. But it was a good kind of sad. It felt real and emotional. The stronger stories, at least.

Big Jo

Ongoing | jungle julia | 2016 released

Hmmm.... I dunno. I'm always on the lookout for manga and comics with fat girls or girls who aren't considered conventionally attractive, or both, but I'm not sure how I feel about this one. So-so art, but hey, better than I could do. Since it's chopped into pieces, three chapters is like seven pages, but I do like the confused grandma at the end of every installment. We'll see how this pans out. 2.5 stars for now. ETA: Upgraded to four stars for being cute and interesting. I like how it's unfolding now that it's moving. I hate, hate, HATE the way whoever is uploading cut up the pages. That's a huge detractor and it makes it frustrating to read. But I'm glad it's being posted at all, so hey.

Kuruizaki No Hana

Ongoing | hakase mizuki | 2000 released

I seriously spent years agonizing over the fact that the publisher went under before releasing the final, translated volume. I thought I'd never read the ending. Then I discovered it had been scanlated about two years ago, and I was so freaking happy. It took them a while to get to it, so I'd lost hope. Thank you so much to the scanlation team! This manga is so sad and screwed up, typical of the mangaka, but at least the ending isn't as depressing as it is in some of her other stuff. Still sad, but it could be worse. I just saw that she wrote a follow up to the series in 2007, though, and I wonder if anyone will ever pick that up. It's been a long time, though, and it seems like her work is less popular in general, so I have no idea if it'll ever be translated. I miss how active scanlations used to be. EDIT: Damn it, I was deliriously tired when I saw the continuation thing, and it isn't for this at all. It's for the other one, The Demon Ororon. I should have read more carefully. But that one should be translated, because that story had such an abrupt ending.

Caramel Honey

Complete | Takuhei | 2016 released

It's actually kinda cute so far, and the seme is really hot. The uke is kind of obnoxious, but he's pretty without his glasses. I hope he stops acting like a frail little baby, though. Oh hey, I didn't know there was a tag for that specific "power," but there it is. Hopefully the uke grows a spine. And I hope the translation gets a little better. I would happily offer editing services to these places, but I don't really know where to start.

Demon Diary

Complete | Lee Yun Hee | 2000 released

I was eagerly buying these up back in the day, as they were being released. Nostalgia! I miss the thrill of walking into the bookstore to see what was new, leaving with an armful of manga. Nothing since has ever quite been like that feeling. But I can't give it the full five stars, just because it always bothered me that she had to change writers, and the story obviously took a completely different turn than what had been planned. I feel like it was supposed to be way more shounen ai, too, but the new writer took it in a more lighthearted direction. It's a shame, but I still have all of the volumes from those years ago, and it is something I look back on fondly.

Hush (Today)

Complete | Today | 2000 released

I didn't realize I was reading the sequel to this, but this one isn't even complete yet. Anyway, I've only read up to chapter 9 so far, but I know what happens because of the whole sequel thing. There are interesting things about the set up. There are some things I can enjoy a bit more knowing what happens later. Just a light, simple story, it seems.

So Serious

Complete | MATSUO Marta | 2000 released

I wish there were more legit kidnapping stories, where there's an actual motive and danger, and the victim isn't a trembling uke who gets yaoi-raped until he falls in love. Of course, this one was kind of weird, and it didn't have much of an impact on me. There was no indication as to why feelings developed, and it seemed too short of a time for anything like that. I do have to say, though, I so enjoyed that gun against his back. I know that makes me kind of sick and wrong, but damn. For that, I raised it from three stars to four.

Senaka made no Kiyori

Complete | KUNIEDA Saika | 2000 released

These guys are always cute. ^^

Yuri On Ice!!! dj: Heat

Complete | Yuzuca Hatori | 2000 released

I haven't finished watching Yuri on Ice, but Yurio is my favorite character so far, so I thought I'd read this. It's short and cute, nothing remarkable but not bad. I really hope Yurio gets a solid m/m romance in the next season. I just want to squish him.

Michikusa (Saika Kunieda)

Ongoing | Saika Kunieda | 2000 released

Is this a duplicate? I feel like I reviewed this one already. It's sweet and cute and sad, and I cry every time.
