MCs and ML’s sister were decent, but ML’s mother and the FL’s family were a pack of scumbags. They make the expression “My way or the highway” seem like a kindly suggestion. Disowning your daughter for becoming an artist is not only intolerant and unloving behavior, it’s also freaking stupid. The brother gossiping to his buddies about how his sister is a “dumb freak” is unforgivable. The ML’s mother was, according to her constantly humiliated husband, “bold and lively” and he refers to her “charms.” She totally came across by her words and actions as an intolerant and mannerless would-be tyrant who made negative snap judgments and insulted people she barely knew to their face. She also treated her husband as though he was a mentally incompetent subordinate in public in front of the workers in their business. If hubby finds that lively and charming, he would probably die of sheer joy by being stomped on with stiletto heels. And all this abusive and humiliating conduct is supposed to be their way of showing how much they love? Ludicrous! This trope of painting someone as unforgivable and irredeemable so the author can repaint them as loving and caring is overused and stupid in the extreme. Make it believable by originally showing them as appearing cold and unemotional. Don’t make them into ghastly psychopaths and then try to make out that they’re really loving and good. That’s bad psychology and damned poor writing.

Sorry, but ML was a twit. I can understand someone closing their emotions off from trauma, but he treated her the same way and then became all butt-hurt at her supposed "abandonment" and "betrayal." He also made snap judgments about her and her actions. He needed therapy; she needed to completely stay away from her toxic family and filth step-son.
