The unconditional love everyone felt for that deranged old psycho basically ruined the story for me. He had as much business raising his granddaughter as I do performing brain surgery. Then he laid down the law about how his son and the FL were to get married. With the fact that he lied to all his sons for all those years and kicked out his pregnant wife, letting him within a mile of his innocent granddaughter was more likely to cause her enough emotional harm to mandate therapy later in life. His self flagellation at his wife's grave didn't convince me; it was more like a grandiose gesture from a male drama queen. The only thing he deserved was a size 12 boot applied with vim and vigor to his butt. The earth should have moved and swallowed his nasty self.
