It's because living people realize that how much the dead person meant to them when he was alive and how much better they could've treated him well . Then out of guilt and regret they respect the dead more. Its better to respect peeople while they are still around and forgive the dead without any resentment ..... I mean I do respect dead people but I respect them the same as they were alive cuz, y'know what is it gonna do if I will respect them more if they're dead?
