As a queer person and rape victim, it really doesn't surprise me how often rape shows up in yaoi. I've been reading it for years now and it still disgusts me. People like to justify their fetishes by distancing themselves from it. It's "fiction". I see a lot of so-called psychologists in the comment section. Do you condone murder just because you like watching psycho-killer movies? People aren't just black or white, yes or no. There's always an OR. So it depends on the story and the reaction will be totally different if it's a real life situation. I think the reason we see it a lot in yaoi is because, in Japan at least, there is a historical context of rape being deemed a romantic gesture. I think, as a fictional trope, rape sometimes allows the reader to feel in-control of a situation that, normally, IRL, would be horrifying and out of their control. If that makes sense.
