you can't claim "representation matters" and "fiction doesn't effect reality".
if you agree that good rep of marginalized groups can help marginalised groups then you inherently have to accept that fiction does effect reality. and conversely how bad rep can effect marginalised groups.
I want to believe that as humans we can distinguish and separate fiction from reality. And this is just my personal POV but i have never understand why people take so seriously any kind of fictional work. It's not real. Our brains have a great deal of trouble differentiating patterns learned from fiction from those learned from reality. So no, fiction cannot “affect reality”, but it can and absolutely does, even in ways you aren't aware of at the time, affect our perception of reality on a fundamental level

I agree with good representation in fiction can effect how you view a group but i don't believe everything in fiction effects reality. I might have understood this comment wrong but personally I will sometimes enjoy reading something that I wouldn't necessarily enjoy in real life.
