I highly recommend immersing yourself in the language what ways you can. Specifically, immerse yourself in ways that involve as many senses as possible. Subbed anime is a great way to do this. Hiyya~ I'm currently in intermediate level, and i would say that what I'm doing right now is focusing on getting familiar with the words!
i read some japanese books, (start from manga --> novel --> newspaper) to improve my reading and watching some movie to improve my pronunciation.

Learning Japanese isn't as difficult as you'd think. In some ways, it's actually easier than English, seeing as the grammar follows a set pattern. Here are some of the main sites I use to help me. Sorry for blasting a whole bunch of links at you... XD
