Tone indicators are stupid
Did I make this topic just because I have a shit memory and I don't want to pull out a chart anytime someone puts /whateverthefuck- then you're absolutely right- Who the hell decided that we should memorize a whole list of this bullshit when you can just make your message obvious through context-
theyre annoying and i hate having to put them for sth thats obv sarcastic. if u dont get obv sarcasm i dont care thats your problem not mine. if u dont get basic sarcasm dont be on the internet. it isnt anybodys job to memorize stuff bc ur too stupid to comprehend. ik theyre for ppl who dont get stuff or whatever but its annoying and im not abt to ...... 1 reply
I use them when there are potential triggers or I feel my joke wouldn't carry well with someone who doesn't get it. I don't use them every time though. reply
its bc some neurodivergent people like myself cant tell the tone see how "i hate you /j" and "i hate you /srs" can have completely different meanings? (/j means joking and /srs means serious) tone indicators were made because its hard for some neurodivergent people to pick up on social cues so theyre used to avoid miscommunication 2 reply
Agreed, they don't really have much practical use beyond avoiding accidental conflict (see "/s" usage on Reddit), and even then they're used way more often than necessary.

As someone who has a very hard time distinguishing between people's tones in text, I think tone indicators are good for everyone. Because if you say some stupid joke that's offensive and put /j or /s behind it if someone sees it you can avoid unneeded negative interactions with them. The only one I really understood was /s for sarcastic, I know that one has been used for a while now (at least on reddit) and it can be really helpful since some people have a hard time detecting sarcasm. I don't really get the point of most of the other ones, I feel like it's easier if you just type out something like "genuine question" at the sta...... reply
I sometimes put /j because sometimes people take my satire seriously and get angry. But I don’t care about tone indicators. It’s nothing to get worked up about for me. 1 reply
