Phone dies after update?

Everytime i update my samsung phone theres always a risk that it will never turn on or be undergo factory reset... has anyone experienced something similar. My phone is around 3 yrs old. And it died after software update. Eventually it was able to turn on again but now i live in fear. I just successfully completed another software update tho so i hope that was just a one time thing.
