i think 'people are fucking weird for judging others based on what their name is' and 'you should not give your child a name they are most likely going to get bullied for' can coexist   1 reply

I dont think people gonna bring the weird name argument for name like valley of saffron. Most cases I see is when parent wanting to name their children this weirdass name its because it is funny for them. Absolutely no deep thought behind those decisions, just for momentary laughs for the parents. Or parent who haven't grow up from the "i'm not lik......   1 reply

There's a difference between calling your kid chicken butt nugget and some long name that no one can pronounce. And I don't think it's fair to say people should focus more on names than bullying. As awful as it sounds, most people don't give a crap if your kid is getting bullied. They just care about their kids. And imo that's fair tbh. Bullying ......   1 reply

I think the main difference is that one name is strange out of lack of familiarity and one name is strange, because it's a butchered English name. For example: Řehoř Vítězslav - a strange name for an English speaker. They would struggle to write and pronounce it. It does however have an origin, a meaning and precedence for it. McKaieghleya -......   2 reply

Obviously no one should be bullied because of their names. But I do think there's levels to this. I grew up in a pretty diverse area, so cultural names and names like Precious, Divine, Treasure are pretty normal to me. I don't see any issue with these as they all have lovely meanings. Unique spellings are kinda cringe but still not that bad. Then y......   reply

The worst part about having a weird name is never being able to find it on souvenirs. Like I'm being genuine rn. Myself and everyone I've ever talked to who also has a weird name always agrees on this. I've been told my name is abuse, I should change it, it's ugly, weird, annoying, stupid, obnoxious. I've had people intentionally misspell and misp......   1 reply

It IS very different to be named of a different culture than giving a child a name that is intentionally different and/or weird. They are naming a person, not a video game character, not a pet, not just a baby, so parents should consider how the most important word of their child's life is going to affect them. The actions of naming someone matters......   reply

If you have a stupid name it's just gonna be a minor inconvenience unless its real bad. I have a stupid last name so I know what its like to an extent and since I had the same first name as a few different kids I'd almost exclusively be called by it. It'll be annoying when no teacher knows how to pronounce or spell your name and when people make jo......   reply

This is a really interesting point you're making and I had to think a bit about it. You are totally correct that the real discuss should be that bullying someone based on their name is not okay. Regarding the justification: The way I see it the difference is the reason behind the naming. If you choose a quirky unconventional name you're doing it ......   reply
