Help me please ! What does "Wholesome" exactly means ??
I'm starting to see this often in yaoi : the tag "wholesome". I know "whole" sort of mean full / entire, in my language (i'm french). But even if i searched for definitions i can't find the exact and clear meaning of this word. So can someone please explain it to me with their own words ??┗( T﹏T )┛

The exact dictionary definition is "conducive to or promoting moral well-being." It means the story is very healthy (a healthy relationship), sweet, and cute, not dark or anything. If something is wholesome, it means it's moral, ethical, pure, and good (lol I'm just naming synon...... 1 reply
It originated in earlier English (I guess around the 1800s?) as meaning 'clean' or 'pure' or 'virtuous' or anything that family or kids could enjoy. (Basically stuff that isn't R18, but there is some R18 out there that people might call wholesome, too, just because it's 'softer'.)
Fandom kind of took it as the 'pure' and 'cute' definition and start...... reply
from my understanding, 'wholesome' refers to a very fulfilling, happy-ending-story that leaves you feeling good at the end.
- characters may have a tragic backstory, but will probably be redeemed or have a happy ending. no tragic endings. have read alot of these where the main character is an underdogs(saddled with a crappy fate/backstory and seem...... 1 reply
wholesome is just another way of saying "Heart-Warming", "the plot is so cute and adorable that it can squeeze your heart a little bit!" or "the plot is just so lighthearted" also "the story is extremely soft". i dont know how else to put it XD. sometimes the story can feel a bit vulnerable in how pure it is as well. :) 1 reply
to me, I think of the word "wholesome" as something that makes my heart feel full and I'm literally ╮(￣▽￣)╭! the only other way to describe it is like, when i read something and my heart flips and goes "eeee! that's so cute!!" reply
It can be helpful to supply a sentence to provide context as some words can have more than one meaning, but if describing a story I would think it may be trying to imply the story is 'positive', and not wicked or deprived. reply
As someone who uses it often I guess I mean it's devoid of mmm some specific aspects often seen in some stories (at least for the main pairing). The romance is not toxic, abusive, forceful, there is no rape. There is respect and things are properly discussed and issues are addressed etc... Even if there is a tragic past or bad side characters at le...... reply
