do girls really get bullied for dating a popular guy like in manga

I see this in so many shoujo mangas, but does this kind of thing actually happen anywhere, or is it just for extra drama? In my school, it was like 100 people in one batch and only 30 ish kids in a class, so there was like no bullying at all, and everybody kinda just got along and knew each other well. So, is this an exaggeration, or does it happen lol
