I read a lot of different types of stories like, BL, GL, shoujo, or shonen ( mainly the BL genre tho ) and have considered my self as a "fujoshi" for a long time. But recently, I've seen people people talking about how it is bad being a fujoshi and that if you use the term, it means that you fetishize gay men and it is disrespectful to the LGBTQ+ community. I don't really like the sound of that because I have a few friends that take part in that community. It makes me really guilty and scared, what should I do?
I know that the genre BL can also be divided into shounen ai or yaoi, while I do read both, reading those hardcore stuff was often use to relief stress, ( like how other people watch porn or read hentai ) but now it is concerning me if it is even okay for me to do this anymore.
Its true that there are some who view the term ‘fujoshi’ as someone who fetishizes real gay men but thats their misunderstanding of it. Theres no problem in calling yourself a fujoshi as long as u arent doing anything like shipping real people aggressively! I stopped calling myself a fujoshi a while ago after knowing its real meaning but that didn't stop me from reading these stories since they function for me as a way to disconnect from the real world and just enjoy reading it superficially. I do get your point of you thinking of being disrespectful to your LGBTQ+ friends, I am a part of that communi...... reply
I have been wondering the same thing and if I’m honest, as long as your not making up tropes for gay people, realizing that gay people aren’t the same as the people in the story, it’s fine. I have done that I i don’t consider myself a fujoshi but if you do that’s ok:) don’t let people get you down, alright? reply

personally it's not something i tell people i read, maybe casually to some i know. Do you like BL as an artform or genuinely IRL as well? as in, fantasize about IRL people you know or ship guy friends, or not being aware of a lot of the yaoi tropes being ok only in fiction. Cause t...... reply
In all honesty, being a Fujoshi only has a bad name due to the fact that other 'Fujoshis' has done this and has proven other people their point. There's nothing wrong with liking the BL genre, you don't have to beat yourself over such thing. If you find happiness in it then so be it, as long as you aren't doing anything wrong to the LGBTQ+ people, ...... reply
The term "Fujoshi" literally translates to "rotten woman" and is, at it's core, a derogatory word used at women who read BL and fetishize gay men. The westerners have just misused it for years and changed the meaning. So use it at your own risk.
There's nothing wrong with reading BL, was it porn or just romance, as long as you don't fetishize gay ...... 1 reply
