its best to BE with them instead of TELLING them
note that as much as they are your friend their choice is also not your responsibility, as much as any of their other decisions are not your responsibility

Most of the time they dont really want to die but having a hard time finding a reason to continue living. Honestly it is not easy to convince someone who lost their reason to live because in their mind everything is pointless (im talking from a first hand experience) but try talking about their favorite stuffs and ask them is the death worth missin...... reply
If they have a plan in place and are ready to take action on that plan, encourage them to call 988 if you're in the USA. If you're not in the USA Google what your local suicide hotline would be.
If they don't currently have a plan in place and are not taking action, I try to gently suggest therapy. I do this by first sympathizing with them by tell...... reply
