"Realism" in stories
How do you guys feel about people defending stories with "well it's realistic"? I've seen this expressed in two different stories this week, and it's only ever used to describe characters being forgiven for bs as soon as the story finishes. I asked this in the homepage comments and got two really interesting responses so i would like to see more opinions.
i know ure referencing something specific but to keep it vague i say it depends. i hate graphic depiction of certain forms of violence (particularly sexual violence). ik sa is realistic but why make it so graphic? ppl love to clap back w "it happens irl" but this story isn't doing what happens irl any justice with how heavy the focus is on the forg...... reply

The story not having a good ending
Or an open ending
And not everything working out

When the situations and people aren't "ideal"
They are corrupt
They have their own flaws and
Yeah.....
When not everything is served on a platter to the mc
And not everything always works out for the mc

idk.. to be honest i see this argument the most when stories has consistently bad things happening, or depicting bad things really graphically. at least when it comes to those sorts of things i really have to ask,,, is it that much more realistic for everything to be terrible all the time?? no breaks or reprieve?? it really frustrates me seeing any...... 1 reply
There's no greater fiction than real life.
When people talk about wanting realism, what they want is mediocrity. Whatever version of mediocrity they expect or think of. A lot of life is filled with absurdity or straight up just coincidences, a lot of people are just absurd or completely and unintentionally hypocritical. That is to say, you don't n...... reply
More context would be appreaciated, but i love psychological stories and even better if the characters aren't black or white, i'm guessing that's what you mean. I think it really depends, it wouldn't be "realistic" if the mc ends up dating a grapist out of nowhere, BUT it would be realistic if he ends up dating him after going through complex psych...... 1 reply
