I’m always seeing shoujo straight romance readers vs fujoshis beefing on Twitter, and I do have to say both of these types of individuals are insufferable, and two sides of the same coin. The only difference is straight readers always try to claim that they are more feminist because they read stories that involve at least one woman at the center of the story when that doesn’t really make sense because even if there’s a female character the story can still be patriarchal and sexist. I would even argue that most shoujo manga as a demographic is extremely male centered and most shoujo fans refuse to interact with female centered media if there was not a man involved. They also love bringing up that BL readers hate on every women that appears on screen, which is true to some capacity, but I would say this type of behavior is way more common in straight romance. The way certain shoujo fans treat second female leads to second male leads is drastically different. Female characters will literally get called a bitch and a whore for being slightly interested in the ml while male characters are always getting rooted for and there’s even a whole entire term used to root for them like second male lead syndrome. Most straight romance readers only care about women if they are in love with a man because other female side characters, they will never slightly show interest or give a fuck about their character.
Both of these groups also tend to drag GL into the conversation, pretending to actually care about the genre and lesbians when they refuse to even touch one :/
