You ask the server.
Sometimes they'll give you a separate check, sometimes you need to separate it yourself.
Generally, the server can separate it themselves.
Personally, if I'm at restaurant, splitting is pretty normal, but if someone got something for me at a grocery store, I'd return them the money they spent on my stuff.
