In my opinion, figuring out what degree is worth more is different per person and I think a lot of it is based on what you are interested in, which will help with getting through all the classes required for the degree and make the experience enjoyable. Pretty sure my first manga that I ever read was Pokemon Adventures. First BL manga I believe was Loveless. Or maybe it was Junjou Romantica, but pretty sure that was my first BL anime I watched.
