Using symbolism, illusion, angst, or featuring hard topics, nary makes a story deep or interesting. They're just slightly more competent than their peers. A lot of these "serious" stories usage of literary devices are shallow at best, and absurd at most. Media literacy also includes not accepting what the author gives you
