Rather me it's my younger cousin, when she was a kid her and her family had a neighbor who's well known for being nice and lives with her cat, but one day her neighbor started to act abnormal to the point she killed her cat. The best way to do it is by asking a question in my opinion. Not only does it show interest for the other person you want to converse with, it'll also give you the chance to join in the conversation depending on the question.
