It's not just yao/BL, it's quite common in shoujo on straight stories as well. As for the characters the "older dominant man" is not the issue but the author that purposely made the protag usually childlike and younger than them. I just love drama in general. And enjoy the romance: wondering what will happen to the chara, will they end together etc. I don't self insert. For other language studies. Read a lot. Be constant about it. Write down the vocabulary you learnt on notepad and daily quick read said list at least once a day. Already said by others but manga, anime, books, show etc are an escape from reality. Fun fact(I think): the majority of isekai fantasy shounen have the "loser" protagonist formula bc they sell the redo over fantasy.
