Wow you seem to be going through a lot. First of all, I wouldn't say you're a failure. You had other priorities and that's often how life turns out. I guess it depends on if you have genuine feelings for her and if she has exclusive feelings for that friend she likes. She did say she would be open to dating you, so I would take that to mean she's not closed off to the idea. Here's the thing: you can't make someone like you.
