I'm only partway through, but as a mother, (former) wife, and adoptee, I can easily see where her resentment of him started long before he came home wounded. Being around other war wives and widows I think she would have swallowed being left alone while he was in service as her duty, but him coming back and telling her not to cry over her adopted child who died from flu because "he's not related to you by blood," ... neither are you, buddy. I feel those words will come back to bite you on the ass.
