i can't believe i remembered this! this was an old favorite from god, nearly seven years ago. it's always been a pity to me that english and chinese scanlations never quite caught up (though chinese scanlations seem to be slightly ahead, so i read them all). not sure if i trust bakaupdates on whether or not the series has concluded in japan either.

what an old gem though. got a little heavy-handed with drama in volume three and four with the (ar)rival, but the supernatural and mystery elements are absolutely captivating. narusawa is frustratingly aloof and guarded at times, but as mentor and object of infatuation, i guess that dour reserve only makes those moments when he lowers his defenses so much sweeter or poignant. and what struck me most - volume one, narusawa talks about the limits shin must cross and abide. what sounds should one acknowledge as a voice? and what sounds should one discard as a noise? it's tied into this mythology behind their powers, but also serves as a powerful metaphor for how we as humans let others into our lives, how we guard our limits, our boundaries, and how we release our guards into vulnerability.

Some unimportant notes:
One thing I must mention, I've been a fan of this author art style when I read The way to Heaven. BUT, in the 4th volume of this series, I notice the slight change in art style, most noticeable on the anatomy,angle,perspective of the art. I'm not trying to insult the author, but it seems... something is wrong with the angle of certain face, arm, and everything. when reading volume 4, I legit thought if there's someone else drawing this, is someone work on the 4th volumes onward to 6th volumes instead of the author? Well I did a little research on the release of this manga. The first volume was released on 2003, 2nd on 2004, the 3rd on 2008, while the 4th was on 2011. Hmm, seems like the 3rd volume has a huge leap. The cover art most noticeable change on vol 5 and 6. Slight change start at volume 3 though its just the coloring style while the 4th is where the art seems a bit different especially for both main characters face. So perhaps the author is taking a break for awhile that made the art style looks like how it is now. I think this is the 2nd time my favourite author artstyle change getting me no longer a fan of the art style. The other author is the "Fake" manga, Sanami Matoh. I like the Fake art style but the sequel is where it changes. I understand people have different taste in artstyle, and that's totally fine by me. But this change indeed made me no longer want to read the sequel. Sounds petty of me, I know. It just to much of a shock to me, the change in the sequel.
