Can you believe after all these years I'm finally reading it?

I half watched the anime and the music and sfx are memed to high hell so the whole show feels more like a comedy than anything else, I do like how Light really shows the immature and naive mindset of a teenager like if I got past chapter 1 back in middle school I would've been fully on board with his plan

That said I'm older now so I can see how flawed it really is, but it's cool how the notebook ignites that childish sense of righteous into a god complex and sends Light spiralling down a dark path, while I love the haha loving family btw joke it really is based on real thoughts and feelings that even I had despite also having a great childhood, one look at the world is all you need really

Anyway I will say Light is funnily enough more likeable in the manga, his interactions with ryuk are quite charming. It fun and easy to be on his side early (before he starts going after anyone in his way and not just criminals lol, but I still liked him as a character)

Ryuk is the best character btw my fav character

L also won me over with the smile he's a surprisingly good person, what a pleasant cast of characters it's acc a vry chill and easy read since the chapters are bite size and the planning is way more engaging in the manga where I can pace myself instead of waiting for dialogue lol, dang ig I did like Bakuman back then ofc I would like the author's crown work

L's competency and morality is such a nice foil to Light (he covers it up but the kid makes a whole bunch of mistakes) and it's quire funny how the appearances are kinda opposing that because I did not expect L to be so normal and reasonable I rlly like him, it's nice to like both sides

So yeah, I've heard it gets boring after L dies and I sort of agree, a lot of the fun came from light and L's chemistry and it also feels like the story and ppl involved were a lot tighter with threads carrying on throughout the entire first half, after the timeskip a lot of that is lost with a lot of characters (most notably Misa) doing less

So yeah I'd give it 5 stars up to and including L's death, but 3 stars for the second half. I did appreciate Light's death I thought it was perfect for it to be Ryuk in the end, shows that this power rlly was just on his whim the whole time

Amazing but I stop reading after L died. Him being dead to be replaced by someone who act like him makes me question if he even needed to die.

Admittedly, I find this series to be overrated, but it's not bad. The start and the premise are strong. The cat and mouse chase revolving around catching Kira is always interesting. However, the story does not dig as deeply as I wish it did into its philosophical themes. With criminal justice, the matter of whether someone deserves to die for crimes along with who gets to decide that are incredibly complex due to the many areas that it can be easily corrupted and spiral into fascism. The manga touches upon this, but only on a surface level manner. Light's god complex overtakes the story and makes it clear that he's the villain - his motivations never really come across as sympathetic, even from the start, and so the philosophical debate falls flat. While it can be seen why people agree with him, the opposite case against his philosophy is never all that discussed is regards to criminal justice. However, the art is beautiful and the story is worth a read. Perhaps it just didn't resonate with me.

Okay so a shinigami having their very own death note dropped in the human world was a mere intention? (at least not to Ryuk) because the reason Ryuk writes Light's name on the death note was because his time finally came. From the beginning, when Light picked up the death note, the game started. I remember Ryuk mentioning the dullness to Light after L's death, which means Ryuk was constantly chasing after the thrill that he had to put up with. When Near and Mello started investigating, Ryuk also said that things are starting to get interesting. When Lght started his damned "New World" agenda, L reflected the cruelty in this approach. Kira is too complicated to be invincible and it's not that the people oppose him, he's not even too good to be true, there really just came a time where the fire he ignited would gradually lose its spark no matter how relentlessly he pursued it to keep burning. Ryuk, being the one who caused his demise has always been a calculated move. it wasn't betrayal—in fact, he has the means to do it, to put an end to the game. after all, it has always been Light's fate.

L washing Light's feet scene having a biblical symbolism is the kind of testament that would had me hanging off the cliffs for and here's why;

It's because of the fact that L always knew. L always got his hands over the clues that might've been helpful and from the beginning, his dedication throughout the investigation earned him the same intents and pursuit as Light. The moment he had began suspecting Light and the fact that he's the intellectual superior working against Kira, it was never meant to be smooth for Light. From that moment alone, the suspicion was carved into an almost fine, chiseled for the hinge level, but that was before Light twisted things up. L washing Light's feet parallel to what Jesus did to Judas knowing full well he'll betray him after that is actually frustrating. Because at that moment, L could've been thinking of Light as he submits to him. It's not just him washing over Light's feet, oh I want that damn thing to piss off, but it seems to me that since he knew, either way he's acknowledging the inevitability of his end and just actively accepts that the relentless fire will burn (even moments before his death, he sees Light being quirky and stuff, smirking to triumph). Now I was saddened because I don't only see L as someone who lead the investigation to Kira, but as someone who could've possibly been friends with Light if he didn't do all of that for the love of the game and if the circumstances aligned and wasn't inflicted by something beyond shit. One thing's for sure, L played it off well. The only valid reason I accept why he died is because he tested the boundaries of his investigations further, trying to let more of the truth out until Rem was actually pushed on edge, having him killed. L is a challenge, the crusade that drove Light, well although anticlimactic since it might've went in accordance to Light's plan, L reflected a crucial, overlooked cruelty of Light towards his pursuit of that damned "New World". But despite that, L engaging intimately with Light sure does something that evokes genuineness from him—which by the way cuts deep. L and his genuineness, honesty, a raw (which I'd gladly take), ardent and pure expression or feeling within him, stirring over him as he does the act, washing Light's feet, being the one who paved the way... oh my dearest L.
