this reads like a warm cup of chai. languid, lost in the details, not advancing quickly, but moving like life does, forward ten steps as soon as you blink.

i can't speak to its historical accuracy depicting 19th century central asia, but i can say that it manages to bring many cultures to life. the costuming, customs, environments, and conflicts all feel broadly accurate to someone less familiar with the history. there's a lot of care put into intricately depicting the daily rituals of these people's lives. from herding sheep, to wood carving, embroidery, hawking, fighting off bandits, negotiating marriages, dreaming about a sultan to take you away, gossiping at the baths, the rigid gender roles, the resilience and strength in the peoples surviving harsh climes etc. the small details and conversations! the jokes! it really immerses you in the world. even if not everything is strictly accurate, it feels real!

the art is beautiful, patient, and consistently evocative of a different time.

the pacing is very slow, but that's the charm in this kind of slice of life. there are various story threads woven together and although it can get frustrating when your favourite stories are paused for other ones, there was no story i disliked and i loved hopping around to explore the vastness of central asia.

my favourite couple was probably mr. smith and talas and their whirlwind chance meeting and marriage. a widow from a small desert village and a british anthropologist, both overcoming miles of desert--and even more dire, disapproving mothers--to be together. maybe it's a little cliche compared to the other stories, but i was so charmed! the cliches work! i really want to see smith's mom open her heart to talas...

and of course, the very heart of this manga, karluk and amir. i love the way they build their relationship as he steadily grows into a man... it's a fun reversal of the usual child bride scenario: instead of the old man and young girl, it's a 20 year old girl and a 12 year old boy. it's handled smartly. an arranged marriage with a large age difference is of course, naturally imbalanced, but that was the reality in these times and places and these characters make the best of it. and i just love amir. she's so charming, resourceful and beautiful.

anis and shirin's sisterhood was such a sweet surprise "we'll talk about everything together, and no one will be more important than each other!" (you hear that husband! no one!) this is yuri, to me!!! in a culture dominated by men, the women find havens in one another...

also liked azel's story as he takes over his father's mantel (and how is karluk supposed to measure up to a man like that!). it's especially fun now that azel's caught himself such a strong willed beauty for a wife. they make for a dangerous pair, but will they survive the russians at the doorstep... haha... totally not dreading the eventual russian conquest and russification of the cultures and ways of life i've fallen in love with in this manga...

just so many delightful slices of life....
some stories i was less charmed with like the terror twins leyli and layla in their fishing village (kind of Too Much for me) and pariya learning how to talk to a boy which was cute but not super compelling but they were still fun side quests.

this manga's a slow simmer, but the broth is so flavourful.
