Lighthearted, Romantic Masterpieces

This is the lighter version of my favorites list, made for people who prefer the less darker side of yaoi. In this list, you will find manga with particular emphasis with character-centric plot lines, slow burning relationships and understated yet tender affection between two characters.

Perfect for those who want the same sweet romance of shoujo without the overused romantic tropes and the rigid heteronormative dynamic between a man and a woman in Japanese manga. From these manga, I learned how yaoi is romance that is experimental, liberal and most of all, deeply moving. By going out of the box that many shoujo manga/anime had set for us, meaning the same set of fantasies of a man & woman relationship built by societal gender norms, yaoi, to some extent, offers another kind of romance that feels more authentic. I think I rambled on too much. I just mean to say that I loved each and every one of these manga, and I think, as much as I like Shoujo, I love Yaoi more because of them.

Doukyuusei (NAKAMURA Asumiko)

 9.7(195 voted)
Complete
Author(s): nakamura asumiko
Genre(s): Drama / School Life / Shounen Ai / Slice Of Life

This is one of Nakamura Asumiko's more lighthearted works. I cannot fully express how much I worship this author. There is always something effortlessly profound about her characters and her art. This work particularly places a lot emphasis on the theme of innocent young love between two school boys. Both sentimental and heartwarming, this manga is a total masterpiece.

It's shounen-ai. Actually, it sits on the borderline between romance and bromance. But I'm totally crazy about this webtoon. It's cute and it makes you squeal like an idiot.

Ten Count

Complete
Author(s): takarai rihito
Genre(s): Romance / Yaoi / Psychological / Drama / Slice Of Life

This is Takarai Rihito's most successful yaoi manga yet...and with good reason. A story about a man with mysophobia (pathological fear of germs and contamination) and a psychologist. A story about defilement--both wanting and being afraid to be defiled. It's an excellent manga that really takes it time to allow the romantic and sexual development between the two characters which puts readers at the tip of their toes, waiting for every single manga update.

Author(s): ichikawa kei
Genre(s): School Life / Slice Of Life / Yaoi

It's sweet, simple and terribly beautiful. Common to many shounen-ai pieces, it a manga with a lot of tenderness and quiet affection, yet with the perfect bits of chest-tightening intensity. It's a yaoi manga that is very easy to fall in love with. If you're new to boyxboy works, Ichikawa Kei is the great way to go.

Author(s): ichikawa kei
Genre(s): School Life / Shounen Ai / Slice Of Life

A story about two boys from two different schools taking the same train. There is some kind of profound intensity with the simplicity and understated romance of Ichikawa Kei's works. Slow Starter is sweet but never too much. Like her previous works, the romance builds up from the friendship the two characters found in each other. It makes it all the more lovely to read.

Author(s): suzuki ami,Itsuki Kaname
Genre(s): Drama / Romance / Yaoi

A manga about young men who work as prostitutes in a red light district in the Edo period. A story of longing between two brothel whores who are forbidden to fall in love. The historical setting is gorgeous, more so with the art. The detail put into this historical manga was spectacular. The plot was also brilliantly written that it will really invest you into the story.

Doushitemo Furetakunai

Author(s): yoneda kou
Genre(s): Drama / Romance / Yaoi / Slice Of Life

This is a manga that really tried to accurately portray men and well...being gay, along with its insecurities and social stigmas. It's a masterful piece that really knows how to hold back the romance yet still make its readers' hearts flutter. It's down-to-earth and realistic. It's also so good that they turned it into a movie.

Author(s): sakuragi yaya
Genre(s): Comedy / Drama / Slice Of Life / Romance / Yaoi

A sweet and lighthearted romance about a single father and a pediatrician. It's an excellent and down-to-earth piece of work. The couple's relationship had no trace of the heteronormative dominant-seme-passive-uke formula. The characters were also less androgynous, and looked more masculine since the author was going for something more realistic. The characters were complex and their dynamic was beautiful. I totally loved it.

Koujitsuei no Tobira

Author(s): Shoowa
Genre(s): Action / Drama / Mystery / Slice Of Life / Yaoi

This was a fantastic work. The plot felt like it could be made into a movie. The characters and their relationships were complex. The story and delivery was heartwarming. I loved how it took place in Paris, and that the characters were foreigners. The amount of detail the mangaka put to create this setting and her characters is remarkable. It's these types of manga that reminds me why I love the yaoi genre so much.

This is perhaps, along with Ten Count, a classic favorite of many yaoi readers. It's a sweet and simple romance with very likeable characters and a fairly slow and realistically paced relationship.
