Someone in the comments once asked "What's wrong with Letio" And I did some thinking.
As a writer I once received advice for writing sociopathic/psychopathic characters. It's important that they're not just blood hungry crazy people, but rather their mental abnormalities will present themselves when it comes to making decisions. A psychopath might not be as inherently empathetic, and would choose paths that are lacking in morals, but straightforwardly accomplish a goal, while a normal character would equally weigh the moral and ethics of a decision against the benefits. We can see that Letio is very willing to ignore human lives to accomplish his goals. He felt that Selena was the most important person to him, and to protect her, he can do anything- however immoral they may be. We saw this in the case of him killing the three classmates who bullied Selena. Morality isn't even in his mind when it comes to killing. He's smart, so he obviously won't outright murder them and be labeled as a crazy person. But when he saw the opportunity, he took it to protect Selena. I feel that this latest scene where he helped Celestine by asking him what his goals were, was something targeted only to benefit Selena as well. She is in a very sketchy position right now by faking her identity, and I think Letio is ensuring that Celestine won't put Selena in more danger by forever refusing to take on the role that she is currently bearing for him. I don't think he is a true psychopath and an irredeemable villain at this point either. We've seen a few glimpses of his past and know that he was raised in a very hostile environment that didn't foster the development of empathy, but he met Selena in the past and holds her to a high esteem because of their previous encounter- which I feel shows that he's not someone selfishly pursing his own progression, nor someone totally without empathy. It's kind of pushing it to say he's a good person who is only helping Selena because he cares about her... but he's a character that could very well take one of two routes... to be a cruel villain, or to learn how to be a good person and use his talents in a way that doesn't hurt Selena whom he cares about.
However we have also seen that the prince, who was the original villain is really scary, but a good portion of his motivations for acting as a tyrant come from the politics of the royal family. He's got plenty of people who want him dead, and he responds with a harsh and cruel personality that doesn't leave him open with vulnerabilities. He's still messed up, and very oriented on Selena's secrets and obtaining his own goals, but he's much less messed up than Letio is proving to be. All I can say is that the author is doing a good job! :D
