Yes, he might have been selfish. But you can't ignore his reason for that. He knew that if he died while being married, his wife would be blamed for his death. That's why he wanted to annoy his wife so that she would go away. And besides, don't you think he's deserved a little bit selfishness? He was basically thrown away by his family.
