A lot of people saying that he should have cut his hair and "dressed like a boy", that's not really the problem. A boy can have long hair and wear skirts or whatever else and still be a boy. The problem is that no one acknowledged that he was a boy even though he was one and clearly preferred to be acknowledged as such
Not to mention the mentally abusive mothers and the other characters ignoring consent
