I think he really did not want to do it but he was part of the rebellion against the crown prince. They wanted to put someone else in the throne. Later on he wanted out of if but couldn’t since he’s already part of the rebellion. He was stuck and had no choice I guess so he stayed and continued against the crown prince while the duchess tried to fix his mistake and save the crown
