toxic narrative

Moon July 19, 2021 9:31 am

a girl her age should not bro worrying about weight or even THINKING of going on a diet. this narrative that a healthy, growing child in need of nutrients has to be put onto a restrictive diet in order to not become “fat” (and therefore, less attractive) is incredibly toxic and damaging to the audience which this webtoon influences. there may be young readers, just like the MC who read this and think that there is something wrong with them if they look a certain way. this is not something a child of their age should be worried about it, or anyone for that matter!

i mean it kinda does make sense since a lot of people will judge her for her weight since this is an era where nobles are highly strict about literally everything. i mean people wore corsets to be 'thinner' back in the days. but if possible, yeah, maybe author shouldve taken that one out since shes still a small child

I'm not sure if it's just me (female_16), but I've never thought about weight insecurities reading things like this. Just seemed like something people think about as a personal issue and not doubting it on myself

just because it doesn’t apply to you, doesn’t mean that it does not snd will not apply to others. i think the mc is even younger than that, which makes the focus on her weight even more outrageous. im just pointing out toxic beauty standards such as this (weight) which you can see in some webtoons. there’s no reason to excuse this kind of narrative because you’re not “sensitive” or “insecure” enough. this is how insecurities begin

people forget that corsets were also PRACTICAL. they were also used as bras, and helped to distribute body weight accordingly which would help take pressure off of the spine. many working class ladies wore closets while doing household chores so it was not just for beauty standards. in fact, if we’re going to speak of historical accuracy being thin was NOT considered attractive! we’re talking about a time where wage gaps between social classes were HUGE. massive poverty relates especially among the working classes. being “chubby” and weighing more was considered ideal, as it would be seen as a sign of nobility and access to food etc. so yea webtoons like this only emulate modern toxic beauty standards, in addition of pushing them onto a CHILD. this is poor writing

it's because she's a princess in an old, traditional era. if she's being judged bc she has no magic, then she'd definitely be judged for her weight. it's a bad thing but it's realistic in the setting.

look are you purposefully trying to not see my point? you’re talking about modern toxic beauty standards where “skinny” is ideal, and i’m saying that is not HISTORICALLY ACCURATE. if you look at the dichotomy between social classes way back then, and the huge wage gaps etc you’d know that a majority of the working class barely managed to make ends meet and many times, were very malnourished. THEY were skinny. it wasn’t the ideal - the ideal was weighing more. weighing more meant being a member of the nobility- having access too food, not doing physical labour. stop spreading misinformation if you’re going to argue for toxic narratives in pop internet culture. of course i freaking know white haired handsome men aren’t realistic i’m talking about something entirely else

just say that you’re pulling out these facts from your ass and call it a day so stop replying to me. you haven’t made a solid argument whatsoever and now you’re just arguing for the sake of having the last word. if you don’t like my opinion then don’t reply whatsoever

uhm ok? but why are you so pressed about it then? its not like theyre encouraging children to lose weight... its literally just... there. for the comedy. some webtoons arent historically accurate and thats ok, cause its another world anyway, not the 'Earth' we live in. tbh why would anyone even care about this kinda thing anyway? its not important to the story or the plot. the mc isnt even planned to be insecure about her weight, youre arguing over nothing. plus oh my god, why would you think i would read this shit while researching? do you expect me to read like 70 historical books just to point out that a child shouldnt have to worry about their weight in a goddamn magic isekai manhua? i dont get why youre so mad, i literally agreed with you in my first reply, youre literally just barking like some feral dog at a small problem.

i said "realistic in the setting." the setting is a fictional world where people are narrow-minded— thinks people are "cursed" bc of their hair and eye color, calls ppl "shame" bc they have no magic— it's the stereotypical "old era where people are dumb" setting from every similar story ever. it IS toxic, but it fits into their world. also if you read stuff like this i'm sure you know they aren't historically accurate at all (these authors don't even know what corsets are for). i'm not trying to "have the last word" here btw, just explaining what i meant in my first reply. not arguing with you whatsoever :>

a comment section is a place where people hold discussions. you saw my post and decided to engage in it. if you weren’t planning on having a discussion on why and how this webtoon may be toxic then i don’t understand why you even bothered in the first place. you made the argument about corsets and beauty standards and i countered it. that’s all there is to it

yes, i get that. but i’m trying to look at the bigger picture here. ive seen more than one webtoon or manga that has young children worry about their weight and even FOCUSES on this fact as if it has any relevance to the plot. talking about weight issues and how “skinny is the ideal” only reinforced these toxic narratives within our society. the author has full control over the story and what they should or shouldn’t include. i’m just saying how sad it is, and people who struggle with their weight or people who don’t can read stuff like this and start questioning themselves. plus historical misconceptions drive me up the wall. it’s an isekai webtoon about children damnit can’t we go without “diets” and talks of cutting calories?
