I'm sure everyone has there own take on it--but as I see it One is conflicted because of how that society is structured--how can a slave fall for a master, even if the roles are reversed behind closed doors? In real life, One and all people like him are property of people like Shell, and even is Shell as an individual feels guilty and wants to be dominated in private, Shell is a person who holds power over humans and owns them like cattle. Shell didn't create the system, but he benefits from it, even if Shell wouldn't help anyone by throwing his power away and being a poor outcast.

So, One started to have this thing with Shell, started to have feelings for shell, and then on "tax" day he realizes his realizes it's too hard to reconcile his feelings for Shell with his feelings about vampires and being owned. One takes out his frustration on Shell, which would be bad in real life, because a good dom would never do that--but because this is fiction and because part of the theme is social roles people have verses private feelings and true selves behind the mask, I think they will work it out. But for now, look at the juxtaposition between One being the "master" and One being the partner who *must* come when Shell calls, and who *must* give blood and see his people treated horribly when they get sick or old. How can One separate Shell the person from Shell Overlord? What a luxury for Shell to pretend he has a human master when he is the one with all the real world power. At least that's how I see it.

IDK, I looked at the raws, not that I can read 'em and from I can predict from the pictures, it seems one had a traumatic experience in his childhood. please don't read ahead unless-you care for spoilers.

But, remember in ch. 3 or 4? I can't recall when one spoke of a vampire going blind, and spreading his pheromones around to survive-much to the point of going mad? and how he became violent with Shell overlord, when he asked, "where was this vampire? they are normally found in the slums..."

well, I would guess based on what I saw in the raws and what I can see currently, that one may have been under the care of this vampire, since he reacted so violently to Shell's question.

Furthermore, with people especially children who are abused they have been noted to carry severe emotional over or under development. In one's case, under-development. so, when pressed he tends to explode.

he has a deep fear/hatred-I'm leaning toward fear-of vampires. for what reason I don't know. all I can say is that one is projecting these fears and traumas from his childhood onto Shell. who I may wish to say possibly resembles the fragility he lost in childhood.

    BUT this is all conjecture.

Interesting I interpreted it totally different. Not saying you're wrong...

I thpught that part of the personality shift and sudden sadistic streak is he has a lot of anger and hatred pent up, and suddenly he has one of the species he hates and his mercy. But Shell isnt what is usual and tend so then he feels bad, and also feels some compassion. I think hes developing some feelings but they're still too new and Todd undeveloped for him to notice them much.

I think a lot of the personality shifts are anger and hatred warring with his real personality.

    Different perspective...

That is a valid reading too, I think. Different interpretations come with being fans. :)

wow thanks for that! thats an interesting interpretation and i can agree with you on that aspect. i guess what i am more confused about is the way author shows these emotions and the way they unravel through one's actions towards shell. in the beggining of the first chapter, you get an image of a character that one shows not to be during the rest of the story (at least what we have of it right now). he goes from unisterested to full attention on shell and his "game". i thought the way they're shown to be in the very first pages of the first chapter would have been the result of countless enconters, dialogs between the two character until, well, they were fucking. the fact is: it was the result of countless encounters between shell and one but i dont think the author put enough emphasis on that. just seemed pretty rushed. the way it just skipped some weeks or days that could have been very important. thats why i couldn't understand it, i guess. one goes from a very passive attitude to a very incisive one in no time, or at least it isnt portrayed accurately to us, the readers. anyways! i really like your view on it, really cleared some stuff for me! thank you!

I see what you mean. I think that kind of thing can happen in yaoi--don't get me wrong, I love yaoi, but often there is some "shorthand" of events when is a full novel it might be shown to us in more detail.

I wouldn't say out of nowhere. I mean he donated blood then saw a fellow human beaing be treated poorly by a vampire, then was called by another vampire to talk.
