What's bluffing is that it is a pretty accurate way to describe family ties after a divorce in Japan. Well, for what I know, an individual can bring shame to a family by being a divorcee or being gay and it can actually exclude the whole family from any kind of social life, especially in small villages like the mom seems to live in.
It's starting to change but I remember a book, written in 2007 by a French gay man about what it meant to be gay in Japan and the repercussions if you were out. I bet it evolved a little bit since then but it shouldn't be so far off the mark. If you dabble a little bit in French, the book was named "les chrysanthèmes roses". I don't know if there were any translation available for it tho.
