From what I’ve seen from the raws the author is probably taking their time with the romance, there are so many aspects to this story that need specific attention so I have the feeling it’s going to be the slow burn type which may be a pain to wait for but it’s going to make everything so much better in the end. I wouldn't really classify this as romance per se, it's probably a lot closer to dysfunctional dependency born of grief and infatuation, at least for me. And ye, I'm aware it's heavily plot focused but the omake at the end of chapter 17 turned me off. 'Also you're a guy' a little harmless but it still miffed me like I thought we were well past the oh we're two guys how can it be possible phase. Well one guy x thing in the form of a guy lol. Whether it's romance or gay subtext, Id rather not the author butcher it.

i already predicted this would happen hence my initial comment. i can immediately tell when authors try to diminish a certain aspect of the story. you'll notice authors will start to make jokes, satirize or downplay the situation, regarding said element (in this context, the gay implication). it's jarring and ruins the immersion of writing and art. there could be several reasons why the author didnt follow through and i think it's because of it's sudden overwhelming popularity.....or if they toned it down maybe it'll get a better chance of an anime adaption who knows.
why do i have a feeling that the author is trying to tone down the gay elements? perhaps they didn't expect it to be this popular? i have no problem; the story's great regardless
