Like the difference with how the mc was taught "shield"
The doctor lady, who's life isn't constantly the line by being on the battlefield and only dealing with the aftermath, taught MC the basics of a shield that should work normally
But the supervisor taught MC how to practically and realistically use it in the battlefield. Small/reckless actions could easily spell death.
Difference in situational knowledge
I feel like chapter 5 reveals a lot about the general's characteristics
He is most definitely abusive, but at the same time he is one of the few people who is teaching the MC valuable things to survive in the battlefield
His orders do try to ensure safety, and I feel like he most probably is the type to prioritise winning the war.
He's basically ready to sacrifice nearly everything to do so, which is why that scene with the skeletons latching onto him becomes so crucial
He is fine with being resented or cursed at as long as it means he can survive another day to bring home victory
Or maybe I read too much into it at 3am
