I went back and started reading from the beginning and Cesare’s actions from the very start make so much more sense now. Why he was a little weird at the start, it had been a while and this was a Catherine who didn’t know him, and why he kept sticking around her. He tested her quite a lot to double check if it was the same person he had known in the brief time they were together 600 years before, and she very much was. This is especially true of her reaction to him standing in the rain before collapsing. And doing dangerous things when she should really just not. I don’t think he could explain any of this to her though (I also don’t think she would have believed it)
