I think the reason people feel aggravated at this story is that it is trying to do too much with too little. It is a story about relationships, for one, but also a mystery involving multiple characters and events. Mystery stories in particular need a lot of time and story to invest and enthrall a reader. The characters didn't have sufficient time to develop the feelings that were shown. Both fathers were introduced and given difficult, and somewhat cruel backstories but not the proper time to heal the relationships with their sons. The long lost brother was thrown in as an afterthought despite being the driving force of the lead characters actions. Let's just say it wasn't the worst story I've read. It had a good deal of potential but fell disappointingly short.
