Japans legal age is 13 and they have that fetish so yeah... (Not defending just explaining)

The age of consent is 16. And in Japan they would definitely frown upon this. Teachers aren't getting with their students. Office workers aren't going after highschoolers without looking like creeps.

And the age of adulthood is 20. They cannot drink until then an etc.

I just want to defend Japan. Unfortunately, just like America - it's just creepy old guys who love the idea of getting with a child.

This change from 13 to 16 happened 3 years ago because of a series of scandals. And I'm sorry Japan is full of creeps or how they would say? Lolicons. Easiest place for schoolgirls to sell used underwear. It's frowned upon by the last bit of their society That's still in place, the others are either creeps, isolated in a room or protesting against immigrants because they're "rude" (even tho nobody there wants to do the jobs immigrants take).

The age of consent thing is a common misunderstanding. The previous minimum age of consent of 13, set by the national government, was only the threshold for when it becomes a *national* crime. National crimes are things that are made illegal by the nation of Japan itself, and have penalties that are defined by the national government. Every prefecture and city also has their own laws *on top* of national laws, and there are age of consent laws in every prefecture that range from 16 to 18. I think some cities even have their own laws and penalties for such crimes as well. If you slept with a 15 year old literally anywhere in Japan before 2023, while it wouldn't be a *national* crime, it would be a prefectural crime and you would be in serious trouble. Most places, a 17 year old would also be just as illegal.

Essentially, the national age was only low because they generally left it up to the prefectures. But because this system led to misunderstandings from other countries and mischaracterizations of Japan, namely people saying "The age of consent is 13!" they increased the national age of consent to match the lowest prefectural age of consent.

Japanese people are as put off by relationships between adults and kids as other places. It's not *acceptable* there. But there are still going to be stories that push the limits of what's acceptable, because one of the things people do is get thrilled and intrigued by stories about people doing things they shouldn't do.
