Spoiler/Possible Explanation:
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think they do end up together in the end. Eric can't live in the society that Shell belongs to and so excludes himself to the wasteland that his parents lived and died in. However, Shell does and visits him whenever he can (I saw the ending in a literal sense instead of a illusion, so please do correct me if I'm wrong.

Okay, I get that Eric orchestrated a plan with Shell to fake his death & take the blame for the whole thing, but in the end, they couldn't be together, so does this count as a Tragedy?
The last time I read a comedy that ended in violence & a bitter-sweet ending of parting ways was Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro. That series defies genre because it couldn't stick to one.
