honestly yeah! this story was probably “progressive” when it came out as the message of “anyone can be beautiful” was said to conventionally unattractive characters. However in that same breath, it often took their characteristics and removed them to make it seem “more beautiful” like the example you gave. I loved this story as a child, but growing up it really makes you realize how surface level these stories are in relation to true feminism. You see it a lot in stories around this time frame where they are trying to be progressive, but still do not believe unattractive characters are fully lovable without removing key characteristics that the authors find “ugly”. But i will say, the SP were not initially made to be good characters and their actions do show that. Their development was only as much as the author allowed them to be. I enjoyed this story but i respect your views bc it is verrryyy dated. ε=ε=(ノ≧∇≦)ノ

Then at the same time claiming the curly hair is ugly and then straightening it.
Can’t stand how bad this is and everybody in the comments just keeps on praising it to the high heavens.
