He's playing up as an idiot who only knows how to spend money bc he became rich overnight. It's a way for him to disguise himself without drawing the wrong type of negative attention. Remember, his house was slaughtered for plotting against the crown and making their heir the king. So, if he was shown to be too brilliant or too clever, that would raise his death flag real fast.
