They ignore her feelings, her wishes, her dislikes, the reports of mistreatment... I can understand that as an adult you have to make decisions, and sometimes, for the child's well-being, even against what the child wants. But this was simply neglect and coercion that hurt her, something she had to endure and couldn't do anything about. I don't think that's right, and it's not how you create an environment where the child confides in you and trusts you. Sorry for the rant, but I find this kind of thing hard to bear, and it happens so often.
