Because Loki wants to keep a memory of his father legacy alive, he want people to remember his father as good and kindhearted king he was and not the monster he became because of the Imu, he took his father sin on to himself
I don't understand one thing. If the elder saw what happened to Harold and heard what he ordered Loki to do, then why did he let the whole village make an outcast out of Loki? That's so stupid
