This is definitely shounen ai and not yaoi. Other than that, it's a really cute story. (Btw, you can sometimes tell when the mangaka is a straight dude, and I'm 90% sure that's the case here)

I dont think its shounen ai. I mean the intent is to have a boyfriend/boyfriend relationship and it kind of has that show of they want more but the author did well considering age and all they are still young and exploring is a thing but they kept it fluffy and still love.

I dont know about assuming about the mangaka's gender and Sexuality
It would be cute if they were a dude into soft love though but we will not know until the mangaka feels they ever wanna share and on top of that its a pen name they use.

The way I understand the distinction is that yaoi=depicts explicit sex scenes, while shounen ai is simply that, love between boys that doesn't necessarily involve sexual elements. I know there's a panel of them naked and all, but the clear focus of the story is the emotional relationship, not the physical one.

As for the author's gender, I got the idea from the many BLs where the mangaka MC is asked to draw BL by their publishers when that wasn't their focus before. I think that kind of thing really does happen irl because there's a high demand. Plus, this mangaka's art style reminds me so much of ToraDora. The characters, esp the uke, would have passed as a loli if they're female. I know I'm generalizing, but most people who like loli are men. That's where my suspicions came from. Just wanted to explain that, I'm not picking a fight either

I feel like you're misunderstanding something haha. BOTH shounen ai and yaoi fall under the BL umbrella. Shounen ai literally translates to boy love– it's where "BL" comes from to begin with. And like I said before, there are separate genre names to make a distinction between stories with explicit sex and stories without. That's why I said this should only be categorized as shounen ai and not yaoi. I never said it's not BL

Shounen ai is a made up term by western fans that just tried to translate BL back into Japanese but it was always BL and yaoi in Japan. It’s a western distinction that doesn’t really exist outside of tagging on some old websites. If it’s not smut then it’s just BL. This website doesn’t even tag consistently with the concept of “shounen ai”.

Umm no... BL is definitely the newer term, probably ten or so years. Shounen ai has been in use for decades more.

It hasn’t been used widely in Japan since the 70s and 80s. Honestly Japanese fans don’t even really use the term yaoi anymore either. Essentially, it’s all called BL. Yaoi and shounen ai are basically old fogey terminology but westerners don’t know this and are decades behind this trend.

Also shounen ai was for the very old BL that focused on…boys. It’s wasn’t necessarily because it was “less sexual” but because it featured actual boys which typically as a result was less sexual because it was about school boys. I’m just trying to let people know that these are considered outdated terms and that these “distinctions” don’t exist in the same way in the modern day. It doesn’t make much sense to try and categorize modern BL series by terms and trends that have fallen off

Now I'm confused whether you're agreeing with me or not lol. Also, yes, the distinction very much does matter, and BL publishers definitely still use them. The separate subgenres are for when people want explicit sex in their BL or don't. The reason they're used in sites like this is to make it easier for us to find "purer" love stories with less focus on sex when the mood strikes. I know because I'm like that. Sometimes I get sick of all the smut and just want non-sexual romance between boys/men. I don't even know why this is supposed to be a big deal. It's all BL at the end of the day

This discussion is hot hahahaha I just know I like smut but every now and then to have a new start a pallet cleanser like fluffy/lemon

It is indeed a shounen-ai (as it should, it would be too weird watching these two kids having sex)
