I had a feeling the emperor ordered the kill. Only because they were so secretive about it in the backstory and the ML also was scared to kill his client because he could be killed and he seemed like it would just be a hard mission for him. Why would it be hard? Because he has to get through the castle barriers, sneak into the emperor’s room and hope to kill him before the guards arrive
