"Isn't it hypocrisy to only heal people you can see?"
First of all, let's DEFINE hypocrisy, because most of the authors using it don't seem to fully comprehend what it means. Let's fully break it down, shall we? It boils down to ACTING OUT feelings, beliefs or virtues someone doesn't believe or feel. Very straight forward definition. It is meant to describe ACTING a certain way, yes. But that's where the similarity ends to that stupid, cliche scene in chapter 10.
"You're only doing it out of self-satisfaction!"
Okay. So? Secondly, doing something for self-satisfaction isn't hypocrisy. She didn't go up to the woman and say, "I'm doing this to be a good person." She felt compassion in the moment and acted on it. That isn't hypocrisy. Also, the prince has spent at most with her two hours in total meetings at this point. He doesn't know her well enough to decide what is or isn't hypocritical.
And finally, the elephant in the room. Only treating people she can see. I see it come up again and again, people decrying the MC because they are only able to help a limited few. So. What. Genuinely. Altruism is nice in theory but it doesn't pay the bills. Only the wealthy have the luxury of altruism and even then, they can only help a limited few. Should they just not help at all, then? The lesson being shown here doesn't ever seem to be thought out. Every time it comes up, it's treated as if the MC is a "bad person" for only helping those they can see but they ARE helping people. Some help is better than nothing. What's the solution, then? The point of a lesson in story telling is to TEACH but every time this kind of thing appears, there's almost never a solution. Maybe there was one in this one but I got to that page and instantly dropped, because I'm tired of that cliche.
Even if she had healed that child in exchange for money, it wouldn't be wrong. She was still helping. She can't WORK FOR FREE for everybody. Because guess what? That's WORK. She's using up magic power, time, energy, and emotions in regards to another person. That's a form of work, which while it can be rewarding on its own, should be compensated. And instead of warning her about burn out or praising her, he chooses to call her a hypocrite. NO, DEAR PRINCE, YOU ARE THE HYPOCRITE HERE. You're the one espousing morals you don't believe in. You claim that self-satisfaction is wrong when it comes to helping others but what have you done to help others? You are in no position to preach about this. I'm dropping, I'm not even going to bother finishing the chapter. I hate this trope with a passion.
